Dr. Wrestling:Punk wins World Title
July 3, 2008
This week for That’s My Story and I’m Sticking To It I’ll be telling you what I think of CM Punk winning the World Heavy Weight title.
It seemed obvious that a World title would change hands at Night Of Champions but that didn’t happen so what happens with Raw? Would the WWE’s flag ship show be without a world title? The question was answered this past week on Raw and it’s one of the biggest shockers in pro wrestling history. As Batista power bombed Edge in the ring and the fallen champion was staring up at the lights. the music of the money in the bank winner, CM Punk played in the arena. Less then ninety seconds later CM Punk was the World Champion and the viewing audience was stunned. Later in the night, JBL, who is a former WWE champion challenged Punk to a match and it was set, Punk would defend against, the former champion. Well, you can see the writing on the wall here, right? The WWE has Punk use the title shot to get it out of the way and then JBL wins the title to have there be a world title on Raw. Once again, the WWE shocks us all when Punk actually retains the title and is still the World Heavy Weight champion. This title win is significant for a few different reasons. First of all, how often is there a total an completely unexpected shocker on WWE T.V.? Sadly, it’s rare that the WWE produces “must see” T.V. but this past week was one of those must see shows. A decade ago, there was must see T.V. on every week and that’s because you didn’t know what could happen. Well the WWE being the only major wrestling company around and with no direct competition on T.V. it seems the WWE became almost too comfortable with their top spot and the product suffered because of that but with the drafted as well as Punk surprising title win, it seems like that could change. That being said, the WWE did a really great job with the draft and it seems like with the move to My Network T.V. they have focused on making the Raw and Smackdown brands more even in terms of star power, which the WWE accomplished with the draft. Smackdown now has the WWE champion, Triple H, who I never thought would go to the “B show.” Jeff Hardy and Mr. Kennedy will also be seen on friday nights, which really gives the fans more of a reason to tune into the show. Now this is just my own theory here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Triple H’s move to Smackdown was a way for him to say that he brought Smackdown to the same level as Raw. That’s just my theory but then again who knows?
Now let’s discuss CM Punk with alittle bit more detail. Punk made his name in Ring Of Honor where he had a legendary series of matches with Samoa Joe, who is actually the current TNA World Champion. Punk’s run in WWE has been a rocky one to say the least. When he debuted he was given a push with most of his matches being quick almost squash match victories. Punk then began jobbing in many matches, which fueled internet rumors that Punk had backstage problems with WWE agents. Eventually he would win the ECW title from John Morrison but would have a less then memorable title run and would lose the title to Chavo. After Jeff Hardy took a sixty day vacation for violating the WWE wellness policy, Punk would win the Money in the Bank match at Wrestlemania 24, which gave him a title shot. From there Punk was jobbing in many matches and it’s tough to say weather the WWE was just burying him or if it was apart of the plan for him to win the world title. I mean the WWE has him lose matches so that people didn’t think he was going to win the title but when he does it would be even more of a surprise. Either way Punk is the new World Heavy Weight champion and it should be really interesting to see what happens with his title reign in the next few weeks. Besides creating must see T.V. Punk’s title reign also makes views want to tune in the next week to see what happens. It’s too early to say weather Punk will be a legitimate World Champion and it remains to be seen if he has the ability to carry the title on Raw but it should be entertaining to watch.
Until next week
